After the 2000 US Presidential election I joked with my students that I was going to run for President in 2004 for two reasons. First, I would then be old enough to serve as president. And second, because, like W, I met the minimum requirements as defined in the Constitution.

In 2004, I resurrected my joke about running for president. I was running on the "common sense" ticket. I was informed by a relative whom I have great respect for that I really didn't want to be the president. It was a joke at the time, but I concur.

And after reading Gore Vidal's quote, I agree even more.

Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so.
